Summer 1

Theme Learning Question:

Were the Vikings raiders, traders or settlers?

Curriculum Coverage:

In English, our text this term is ‘The Journey’ by Aaron Becker. This picture book is about a lonely girl who draws a magic door on her bedroom wall and through it escapes into a world where wonder, adventure, and danger. We will be learning to write descriptions of different settings and we will be creating our own story based on the book ‘The Journey’.

In Maths this term we will be focusing on Fractions, Time and Angles. Within Fractions, we will be learning how to add and subtract fractions with the same denominator within one whole. (eg 5/7 + 1/7 = 6/7). We will be learning how to tell and write the time from 12-hour and 24-hour digital clocks. This is something you could get practising at home! Within our angles topic we will be learning how to identify whether angles are greater than or less than a right angle.

This half term we will be learning about the Vikings we will learn where and when the Vikings settled in Britain. We will also be learning about Viking society, what Vikings were good at, and how they told stories. We will also be learning about Viking beliefs and how Vikings have had an impact on our local area.

In Science, we will be learning about the states of matter. We will be learning about solids, liquids and gases and how they can be changed. They will find out how solids and liquids can be separated when they become mixed and explore reversible changes. They will create their own sorting machines and learn how to filter a solution.
