Welcome to St. Paul's!

Welcome to St. Paul's!

Class of 2018

A very warm welcome to St. Pauls!

I am thoroughly looking forward to working with all of the children this year and to working in partnership with you to ensure the best possible beginning at St. Pauls.

In the 4+ we will be covering some interesting and enjoyable topics throughout the year through our creative Early Years curriculum. The children will be learning through a variety of fun and challenging activities incorporating all areas of the Early Years Foundation Stage curriculum. These will include a range of structured activities where the children will be working with an adult, as a whole class or in small groups and also independent activities, which the children will have the opportunity to choose themselves.

Early Years Curriculum

For the first half term we will be learning all about dinosaurs! To develop our Understanding of the World we will be looking at different dinosaurs in detail and comparing similarities and differences between them and the world they lived in through an exciting range of activities.

Within Communication, Language and Literacy we will be thinking about poetry and rhyme supported by daily phonics sessions. We will also be practising writing our names. At St. Pauls we use a cursive handwriting style and we begin using the pre cursive style in the 4+. The children will have handwriting sessions in addition to their phonics and literacy to enable them to become comfortable with forming the pre cursive style. You can support this at home by practising forming letters and your child’s name using their name card, an example of our pre cursive alphabet can be found towards the back of your child’s partnership book.

During Maths sessions we will be concentrating on number skills, including reciting and recognising numbers from 0-20. We will also be looking at 2D and 3D shapes, using mathematical terms to describe and discuss their features.

We will be thinking about new beginnings during Personal, Social and Emotional sessions and will be talking about our feelings and forming friendships.

PE sessions will allow us to explore Physical Development and aspects such as travelling in different ways and at different speeds using different parts of the body. Opportunities to develop fine motor skills will also be supported daily across the curriculum.

Through Expressive Arts and Design sessions we will be engaging in lots of creative activities, including sketching, painting, collaging and junk modelling. We will be thinking about different textures, materials and tools and the various effects these can have.

The children will also have the chance to explore a range of aspects within music, RE and ICT through guided and independent sessions. Within our French sessions we will focus on simple French greetings.

As part of our Dinosaurs topic we will be having a special visit from The Education Group, becoming palaeontologists for the day during their ‘Dinosaur dig’ workshop.

Partnership books

Your child’s partnership book is a very important link between home and school and should be brought into school every day in your child’s book bag. Within the partnership book there is lots of information about various aspects of life at St. Pauls and it features important calendar dates for your convenience so please take note of any upcoming events, especially those involving the 4+! Partnership books are also used to record reading, your child’s leaps (targets), homework and also any messages from both home and school.

Leaps and ladders
This half term our learning leaps will focus on:

Reading: Listening and rhyming

Writing: Getting ready to write

Maths: Counting and shapes

A copy of your child’s leaps (targets) can be found towards the front of their partnership book for you to support learning at home. We will also work on these targets regularly within school and I will be assessing the children's progress towards the end of the half term.

Homework in the 4+ is as advised in the partnership book and should be approximately 1 hour per week. Unless otherwise directed, this time should be spent reading with your child (every day), practising their sight words or participating in activities related to their individual leaps. These are published in the partnership books every half term so please allow yourselves to become familiar with them in order to give the best possible support to your child.

Please use the partnership book to record your child's reading every day. The children will have the opportunity to change their reading books on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays. Please note- if you have not signed your child’s partnership book to state that you have listened to them read their book will not be changed as it is assumed that they have either not read it or they have not yet finished it.

The children will also take part in regular guided reading sessions in school with a teacher or teaching assistant. You will know when this has happened as we will stamp their partnership books with a guided reading stamper.

Our PE sessions are on Tuesday and Friday mornings. The children should have the correct PE kit in school on a Monday morning ready for the week ahead. Please can I ask for all clothing and belongings to be very clearly labelled with your child’s name. This is especially important in the 4+ as the children are expected to dress and undress as independently as possible.

Could I also ask that children have any earrings removed on the days on which we do PE as they create a risk to the child's safety during the PE lesson. Long hair should be tied back appropriately.

If you have any resources or skills that may help us with our topic this half term or would like to volunteer to assist on school trips please let me know. Please do not hesitate to speak to me, either at the beginning or end of the day in the playground with any questions you may have. Alternatively, please use the partnership book to pass on any messages as they are checked daily.

We are very much looking forward to a fantastic year ahead in the 4+!
