Year 4 Spring 1 Newsletter

Dear Parents/Carers and Children,

Welcome back! I hope you all had a Merry Christmas and had a lovely start to the new year! It has been lovely to hear the children receiving and reading our previous class novel, The Creakers and telling me what happened at the end!  I hope you had a long deserved rest and ready for our Spring One Half Term.

Our new topic this half term is Outer Space and we will be learning about the history of space travel and the important events and developments that have happened. We will also be learning about what it takes to be a fantastic member of the NASA team. A space engineer will be coming to visit to teach us all about how to clean and look after rockets and most importantly how to build one! At the end of this half term, we will also be visiting the Leicester Space Centre.

In Mathematics, our LEAPs focus on Multiplication. We will be practising our times tables like normal but discussing thoroughly the multiplication facts that will help us remember our time tables. When learning those skills, we will be putting them into practice when calculating multiplication questions mentally. Other strategies such as the grid method and short multiplication will also be taught.

Within our writing, our LEAPs focus on Conjunctions and Cohesion. We will be looking at how to include coordinating and subordinating conjunctions in our writing, how to avoid repetition and how to use connectives to show the relationship between ideas/sentences.

In reading, our LEAPS focus on language choice in pieces of text. We will be discussing how to identify and use precise words and picking key vocabulary that tells us what the text is about. We will also be learning how to identify why figurative language is used such as: Similes, Metaphors and Personification.

Homework will still continue to be given out on a Friday and will be due in the following Wednesday (I have attached the Homework Menu at the bottom of the page). P.E still continues to be on a Monday with me teaching Gymnastics and Friday with myself and Mr teaching Tag Rugby.

Please continue to approach me before 9am and after school with any queries. If any parents have a particular skill or interest that will link to our topics, do not hesitate to contact me!

I hope you all have another lovely half term,

Miss Burke
