Welcome to the Spring Term!

Dear Parents,

Happy New Year and welcome back after the Christmas break. During this next half term, the children will be focusing on ‘The Big Bad Wolf’. We will have a geography focus this term where the children will be designing maps of Little Red Riding Hood’s trip through the forest. We will be researching lots of information about wolves and pigs so that we can learn how to write captions and labels. Our science topic continues from the previous autumn term, however this term we will be looking at comparing the human body parts and senses to those of an animal. Our key question in science will be, ‘how did Little Red Riding Hood get Grandma and the wolf mixed up?’

Within our Design and Technology lessons, the children will be designing, creating and evaluating a wolf sock puppet.

Over the course of this half-term our Maths will focus on multiplication, and in English we will be using the conjunctions ‘and’ and ‘but’ to join clauses together. We will be reading many big bad wolf stories and concentrating on the author’s language choice.

Your child’s individual leaps are stuck into their partnership books. These leaps will be continuously worked on throughout the half term. It would be very helpful if you could support your child at home in understanding these leaps and what they can work on to develop their skills.

Our PE topic this half term is ‘gymnastics’. The children will be demonstrating simple gymnastics movements and balances and using these to create a sequence. We will be indoors for gymnastics, so please can I remind you to check your child has correct indoor PE kit.

As we have begun a new topic, the homework menu has changed, so please familiarise yourself with this. The homework menu is non-compulsory, but please ensure you are working with your child to practise the weekly spellings and you are reading on a regular basis. Homework is sent out on a Friday and due in on the following Wednesday. Reading books are changed on a regular basis- Monday, Wednesday and Friday and spellings are checked once a week.

If you have any additional concerns, please do not hesitate to catch me in the playground before or after school or write a message in the partnership book.

Have a brilliant start to the new year,

Miss Johnson.
