Year 3 Spring 1 Newsletter

Welcome back children and parents!

I hope you have all had a good break and that the children have come back to school well rested and ready to learn. Our topic this term is Horrible History and we will be learning all about Early British History up to and including The Romans.

In English we will be reading the stories Stone Age Boy by Satoshi Kitamura and Dar and The Spear Thrower by Marjorie Cowley. We will be using these stories to help us write in different genres including diaries, recounts and letters. We will be using compound and complex sentences to make our writing more interesting.

In Maths, we will be recalling and using multiplication facts for the 2,3,4,5,8 and 10 times tables. We will be learning how to derive new facts from the times tables that we know. We will be working towards a formal written method for multiplication by calculating two-digit numbers multiplied by a one-digit number using mental methods and jottings. We will then be solving missing number problems involving multiplication. As part of our topic, we will be learning Roman Numerals and this will be linked to telling the time.

In Science, our topic is Rocks, Soils and Fossils and we will begin by exploring different types of rocks and their properties. We will become rock detectives and discover where rocks have been used in and around school. Then we will learn about the three main types of rock. We will also learn about fossil and soil formation.

In Art, we will be learning about cave paintings and will be creating our own. We will also be looking at Roman mosaics and shield design.

Our topic this term in PE is Dance. The children will create a dance based around a Roman invasion, battle and returning home as a conquering army. Using their own ideas, based on what they've learnt in class, they will design their own movements to depict a Roman invasion and battle. Children will need to ensure that they have both an indoor and outdoor PE kit in school.

In History we will be learning about Early British History from the Stone Age to The Romans. We will begin with a look at chronology and will create a timeline for this period of history. We will be exploring the changes that occurred in Britain during The Stone Age, The Bronze Age and The Iron Age. We will also be learning about The Roman Empire and its effect on Britain.

In Computing we will be learning programming using algorithms. We will also learn how to fix bugs that occur in programmes.

Our Learning Leaps for this half term are as follows:

Maths: Multiplication

Writing: Conjunctions and Cohesion

Reading: Language Choice

Your child’s personalised targets can be found in their partnership books.

If you think you can support our Topic this term in any way, I would love to hear from you.

Best Wishes,

Mr Wood
