Rt. Hon Nick Gibb's Letter to St. Pauls

Year 3 Autumn 2 Newsletter

Dear Parents and Carers,

Welcome back, I hope you have had a lovely break. This half term the children are going to be learning about Ancient Egypt. This history topic will allow the children to investigate and examine the life and times of the ancient Egyptian people. We will be looking at how this ancient civilisation lived and how their ideas influenced the development of modern civilisation. We will investigate where and when this civilisation began and try to explain why this was so. We will also be looking at the design and creation of the pyramids, with the chance of making our own (scaled down of course).

Over the course of this half-term our Maths will focus on column addition and subtraction, while we will study a range of different non-fiction texts in English. These will hopefully include leaflets, instructions and newspaper reports. All of these vary in their composition and sentence structure will be explored through these activities.

Leaps and Ladders

The focus areas for learning this half term are:

Reading: Making inferences about a text

Writing: Identifying and using different types of sentences

Maths: Addition and subtraction

The specific leaps for Year 3 are displayed in the classroom and your child’s individual statements are stuck into their partnership book. We will work on these leaps regularly during lessons to further the understanding of the children. It would also be very helpful if you could discuss these leaps with your child at home so that the children are clear on what they have to do.

PE: Hockey

For safety reasons we follow the ‘NO jewellery’ policy for PE so please can I ask that children with pierced ears do not wear earrings to school on PE days (normally Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Children who do wear earrings to school will be asked to remove them before taking part in the lesson. This term we will be developing our hockey skills. Please check that your child has the correct clothing on each PE day.

Homework and Contact

Homework will again go out every Friday. Reading, Spellings and Times Tables should be done on a weekly basis along with any Maths, English or Topic work which is set. In addition, there is a voluntary Homework Menu from which your children can select tasks or they can come up with their own individual challenges. All work should be completed in the Homework Books provided and be returned in the Homework folders by the following Friday. However, if they can be completed before this day it will give me the chance to ensure they are marked and returned with the correct week’s homework inside.

I value your support and comments so do not hesitate to contact me if you have a concern. I will be available in the playground every day before and after school. Just a reminder that teaching begins at 9.00am so if you wish to have a longer meeting please arrange a time with myself or leave a message for me at the office. The partnership book also has a space for you to pass on any important messages.

Best wishes,

Mr Wood
