Year 3 Autumn 1 Newsletter

Dear Parents,

Welcome back, I hope you have had a lovely break. I am excited to be here at St Paul's and am looking forward to getting to know all of the children in Year 3. This half term the children’s studies are going to centre around Roald Dahl. The children will investigate his writing style and his own personal history and how it shaped and influenced his writing. Alongside this the will also explore the artwork of his favourite artist, Quentin Blake, who illustrated his timeless tales. We will explore his range of poetry and prose and the children should also look to explore his writing in the home environment.

Our Maths studies will focus on place value, reading, writing and ordering numbers up to 1,000 and finding 10 and 100 more than any number. At the same time we will also start to explore all areas of the KS2 National Curriculum. The Foundation and Topic areas will also centre around Roald Dahl, while our studies in Science will focus on Light.

The specific leaps for Year 3 are displayed in the classroom and your child’s individual statements are stuck into their partnership book. We will work on these leaps regularly during lessons to further the understanding of the children. It would also be very helpful if you could discuss these leaps with your child at home so that the children are clear on what they have to do.

For safety reasons we follow the ‘NO jewellery’ policy for PE so please can I ask that children with pierced ears do not wear earrings to school on PE days (normally Tuesdays and Wednesdays). Children who do wear earrings to school will be asked to remove them before taking part in the lesson. Please check that your child has the correct clothing on each PE day as our activities will take place both indoors and outside.

Spellings, Times Tables and Reading form the expected part of your child’s homework, which should be completed every week. An English or Maths task will often also be set on the Friday with all the homework due to be returned by the following Friday. Alongside this I am excited to offer a homework menu of a variety of tasks your child can pick and choose from should they wish. These are not mandatory, but they give your child the opportunity to further their learning in a variety of different ways. These can be submitted at any point and your child should also feel free to pursue their learning independently in any way they may wish.

I value your support and comments so do not hesitate to contact me if you have a concern. I will be available in the playground every day before and after school. Just a reminder that teaching begins at 9.00am so if you wish to have a longer meeting please arrange a time with myself or leave a message for me at the office. The partnership book also has a space for you to pass on any important messages.

Many thanks,

Mr Wood
