Year 3 Spring 2 2017

Welcome back! I hope everyone had a great half term. We are looking forward to our new topic, Superheroes.

In English, we will be reading and writing adventure stories. We will be looking at the recurring themes of good versus evil in superhero stories and will be writing our own based on the Marvel superheroes and a superhero we have created ourselves. Our focus this term is tenses and we will be using the different forms of the past tense in our writing. We will also be looking at the present progressive and present perfect tenses.

In Maths, we will be recalling and using division facts for the 3, 4 and 8 times tables so it is still very important that your child continues to learn their times tables and I would encourage you to support your child to learn their tables. We will also be writing and calculating mathematical statements for division using the multiplication tables we know, including solving missing number problems involving multiplication and division. In addition to this we will be solving word problems or puzzles involving division. We will also be doing some data handling to support our work in Science.

In Science, our topic is Forces and Magnets and we will be observing how some forces need contact between two objects. We will carry out an experiment to compare how things move on different surfaces and will be making predictions and conclusions to support our investigation. We will be exploring magnets and will investigate how magnetic forces can act at a distance and attract some materials and not others. Linked to this, we will see how magnets attract or repel each other and attract some materials and not others, again through experimentation. We will learn how magnets have two poles and will use this knowledge to help us to predict whether two magnets will attract or repel each other, depending on which poles are facing.

In Art, to tie in with our topic, we will be learning about Pop Art. We will be looking at the work of Andy Warhol and Roy Liechtenstein and we will be creating our own Pop Art using what we have learnt.

In PE this term the children will be receiving instruction in swimming at Loughborough Leisure Centre. This will take place on Monday afternoons for a period of ten weeks. They will be taught how to swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres. They will also be taught how to use a range of strokes effectively and will be taught self-rescue.  We will also be learning hockey skills and will be working towards playing competitive games, applying basic principles we have learnt for attacking and defending. For safety reasons, we follow the ‘NO jewellery’ policy for PE so please can I ask that children with pierced ears do not wear earrings to school on PE days. Please check that your child’s PE kit includes suitable footwear, as well as a pair of black tracksuit trousers and a black jumper for when the weather is cold.

In Geography, we will be learning about the counties and cities of the United Kingdom and will be locating them on maps.

In Topic, we will be learning about real life heroes. We will explore what qualities make a person a hero and will be receiving a visit from a real life hero. We will make comparisons between fictional Superheroes and real life individuals.

In computing, we will become sport presenters. We will be finding out how sports programmes on television are made. We will then practise using a video camera and will shoot our own sports footage.  We will gain skills in shooting live video and reviewing and editing video.

Our Learning Leaps for this half term are:

Maths: Division

Writing: Tenses

Reading: Viewpoint

Your child’s personalised targets can be found in their partnership books.

As always, if you think you can support our Topic this term in any way, I would love to hear from you.

 Best Wishes,

Mrs Kay
