Spring 1: Welcome back!

Welcome back!  We hope you have all had a wonderful Christmas and feel refreshed and ready to start the new term.  We will be studying the civilization of Ancient Greece focusing on the legacy of Greek culture on later periods in British history.  We will consider how the origins of democracy in Ancient Greece has impacted democracy around the world and use this idea to support our work on debates.  In our English lessons we will look at the traditional myths and legends from Greek culture, studying the settings and characters.  We will use these characters to help our work in French describing people and creatures in spoken and written forms.  In R.E., as a school, we will begin to use the exciting new R.E. syllabus ‘Understanding Christianity’; in year 6 we will look at the Christian concept of creation, what the bible teaches about creation and how this influences how Christians treat the world. In science we will be looking at one of the new units from the updated curriculum – evolution and inheritance. We will be learning how fossils have provided evidence of life millions of years ago and how characteristics are passed on from one generation to the next.

In PE this term we will continue with our basketball and start a new dance unit during our Thursday lesson. Our PE days may change and may often be outside so it is really important that children keep their full kit (including outside trainers) in school. For safety reasons, we follow the ‘NO jewellery’ policy for PE so please can we ask that children with pierced ears do not wear earrings to school on PE days. Children who do wear earrings to school will be asked to remove them before taking part in the lesson. Please can children also make sure that long hair is tied back.

Our Leaps and Ladders for block 3 are:

Reading: Language choice

Writing: Conjunctions and cohesion

Maths: Multiplication facts and written methods

Children’s individual leaps are stuck in their partnership books.

Homework tasks will be handed out and written in children’s partnership books on Friday to be handed in the following Friday. Homework will be based on what we have been learning in class, though if your child is unsure of how to complete any of the activities please don’t hesitate to ask me. Please also spend time at home regularly going over the week’s spelling list in order to help your child remember all of them.

We will be continuing with the weekly times tables challenge so children will need to practise the tables that they bring home.  It is vital that the children continue to work on mastering learning these facts so that they are able to quickly apply this knowledge to all of their maths work.

Thank you for all of your continued help and support,

Mrs Halsall and Mrs Blackwell
