Autumn Term 2

Autumn second half term

It is the start of a very exciting half term! Our new topic is Shakespeare. We will be studying a range of Shakespearian plays, including Romeo and Juliet and A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The children will have the chance to perform some of Shakespeare’s works and we will be doing lots of drama to inspire their writing in role as different Shakespearian characters. We are going to concentrate on play scripts, the language used by Shakespeare and adapting it to modern day purposes. This term we will also be visiting Shakespeare’s Birthplace Trust to take part in a workshop.

In our topic lessons we will be learning about the life of Shakespeare and the influences he had on Elizabethan society. We will do some research on Queen Elizabeth I and find out about the type of monarch she was and the changes that occurred in England under her rule.

This half term we will be using our knowledge of electricity and forces to illuminate sections of a theatre backdrop and investigate how to move heavy props safely using levers.

PE this term is Basketball so the children must have their outdoor PE kit in school. Our PE days may change to due to Jungle Book rehearsals so it is really important that children keep their kit in school. For safety reasons, we follow the ‘NO jewellery’ policy for PE so please can we ask that children with pierced ears do not wear earrings to school on PE days. Children who do wear earrings to school will be asked to remove them before taking part in the lesson. Please can children also make sure that long hair is tied back.

Our Leaps and Ladders for this half term are:

Reading: Inference and deduction

Writing: Improving sentence structure

Maths: Using effective written and mental methods for addition and subtraction.

Children’s individual leaps are stuck in their partnership books.

Homework

Homework tasks will be handed out and written in children’s partnership books on Friday to be handed in the following Friday. Homework will be based on what we have been learning in class, though if your child is unsure of how to complete any of the activities please don’t hesitate to ask me. Please also spend time at home regularly going over the week’s spelling list in order to help your child remember all of them.

We will be continuing with the weekly times tables challenge so children will need to practise the tables that they bring home in order that they can confidently apply their knowledge of times tables to our division and multiplication leaps after Christmas.

Please also remember that we are now into the half term when our Christmas production takes place so it is really important that the children are regularly practising their words at home.

Thank you for all your help and support,

Mrs Halsall and Mrs Blackwell
