Year 2 Newsletter Summer 1

Our topic this term is Island Homes.

In English we will be reading different stories about Katie Morag by Mairi Hedderwick which are set on the fictional Island of Struary. We will be using story mountains to plan our own Katie Morag stories. We will also be writing letters to Katie Morag asking her about life on the Island. We will be learning how to open our sentences in different ways to make our writing more interesting. We will also be reading and performing poetry and looking at recurring language before writing our own.

In Maths we will be revising the four operations: addition, subtraction, multiplication and division. We will also be learning about fractions and will be finding fractions of shapes and amounts. We will be learning about coordinates and will use this to help us locate places on the Island of Struary. We will continue to look at measures with a focus on capacity and scales. We will also be learning how to handle data and will be creating and interpreting data.

In Science our topic is Living things and their Habitats and we will start by looking closely at what a living thing is and learning about the seven life processes. We will then compare different types of habitat, including the Island of Coll in the Hebrides, on which the fictional Island of Struary is based. We will describe how different habitats provide for the basic needs of different kinds of animals and plants, and how they depend on each other and will identify and name a variety of plants and animals in their habitats, including micro-habitats. We will also explore how animals obtain their food from plants and other animals, using the idea of a simple food chain, and identify and name different sources of food.

In Art we will learn about the life and works of Rennie Macintosh, a Scottish artist and inventor. We will paint and make out of clay, animals that live on and around Coll. In small groups we will make a model of the Island of Coll using Modroc and will make 3D human features to place on the models.

In PE we will be doing striking and fielding games. We will be learning throwing and fielding techniques and bat and ball skills. We will then be combining these to play a variety of striking and fielding games including cricket and rounders. PE kits will be needed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays.

In RE we will be learning about how sacred places are places to worship. We will be learning about the places of worship for the four main religions and will be visiting St Paul’s church in Woodhouse Eaves.

In Geography we will be learning about the four countries and capital cities of the United Kingdom. As part of our topic, we will locate Scotland and the Scottish isles on a map of the UK. We will be comparing and contrasting the Island of Coll to Jamaica and will be exploring the physical and human features of each. We will be using basic geographical vocabulary and  aerial photographs and plans to devise simple maps.

In ICT we will be learning how to use email to communicate and will be opening, composing and sending emails safely. We will also be learning how to edit and format text in emails.

Our Learning leaps for this half term are as follows:
